CONSENT & CONFIDENTIALITY

WHAT DOES CONFIDENTIALITY MEAN?

Confidentiality is a legal obligation not to disclose information obtained in confidence without the your consent.  Meaning, the information you choose to share is kept private. This includes all interactions that take place within the context of therapy, including telephone calls, in-person or videoconference interactions, scheduling notes, and any clinical progress notes taken during therapy.

This information is not shared without your consent.  

WHAT ARE THE LIMITS TO CONFIDENTIALITY?

We are are legally obligated to disclose information about you to the appropriate authorities, with or without your consent, in the following circumstances:

  1. We are concerned you are at of risk hurting yourself or someone else.

  2. You share any information about the abuse or neglect of a child. 

  3. Your therapy record has been subpoenaed by a court of law.

  4. You disclose that you have been sexually abused by a regulated health professional.

HOW CAN I CONSENT TO INFORMATION BEING SHARED?

You may choose to give permission to release specific information about you to any person or agency that you designate.

If the client is under the age of 16, the parent / legal guardian can provide this consent.  

WHO CAN CONSENT TO THERAPY?

Individuals aged 16 and over can consent to therapy for themselves.  

​

For children and adolescents under the age of 16, the consent of the parents (or , where applicable, legal guardians) is required for the youth to attend therapy.
